So, what is a sound module ?
According to Wikipedia it’s ‘an electronic musical instrument without a human-playable interface such as a keyboard’ !
Sounds like it’s useless, then ? !
No, … not quite ! But, the waters are further muddied because a sound module is often referred to as a ‘tone generator’ or ‘MIDI sound generator’.
The mention of the word ‘MIDI’ is often enough for people to walk away !
Years ago, a sound module used to be inbuilt into keyboards and that was the part that generated the sounds.
But over the years ‘sound module’ has become synonymous with a seperate unit that can be connected to keyboards via MIDI.
It gets even more confusing when you learn that a synthesiser, a sampler and a rompler are also sound modules !
Then you’ve got drum modules for all your percussion sounds … they’re sound modules too !
